Heats & cooks quickly!

We’d bought this square rocket stove last fall, but never tried it until yesterday. What fun! We’d decided to use it for dinner while out running errands. From the time we got home, ( I started a timer for baking potatoes, so I used that to tell how long the whole process took) until our chicken cutlets were ready to eat, was 40 min! Hubby went in to get the stove, bring it out, grab some cement blocks we had laying around to stack it on. I gathered twigs and small branches & fire starters (fat wood & lighter) while hubby got it out of the box for the first time, unwrapped it & looked at instructions and assembled it. It was pretty easy assembly, but as someone else mentioned, it would be nice if there was a way to prevent the leg pins from being able to slide out either way. Ours was completely clean, black & looked brand new. So all the people who got theirs with dirt or soot, probably did get used ones.I had seen videos in the past of how rocket stoves work, so I showed hubby that after placing the divider in, you put your firestarter & fuel in the larger, upper part & leave the bottom area for air flow. He got the fire started quickly. We only used twigs & small branches from our yard, which is what we love about this! And we only used a large handful or two total. While he got the fire going, I floured 3 cubed chicken breasts and put bacon grease in a 10 inch cast iron skillet and we set it on the stove to heat the oil. Once it was melted, hubby thought the oil was hot enough and had me put 2 of the chicken breasts on. It wasn’t quite ready cause they didn’t sizzle. I put a lid on to help hold the heat in, cause it was chilly & breezy. It heated up quickly and in probably 5-6 minutes the chicken was done! I removed the 2 and added more grease & cooked the 3rd piece of chicken. (These were cubed /tenderized by the butcher, so they do cook fairly quickly anyway).Using the cast iron, the chicken cooked perfectly & browned without burning. The pan was very stable on the burner, although I was a little nervous of it tipping. But it felt good & stable & level. Level will depend on the surface you set up on.We chose to put a cookie sheet under it before setting up, to protect our surface as well as catch ashes that fall out the bottom. The fire started well, and did smoke for a few minutes until it got going very hot. Then there was almost no smoke, other than a few whisps coming out the glowing embers at the grate. The bag is made well and ITS ROOMY! I love how the pieces were made to nest in the largest tube! And the whole thing sets down in the carry/storage bag with room to put a few things. I put a box of matches & a few more fatwood sticks in there to have on hand if we take it on a picnic or something. We did have a little trouble figuring out this morning (after it cooled) how to get the upper chimney off the main body. The directions did not explain this and we couldn’t remember exactly how it fastened after we set in. Hubby finally figured out to slide the chimney stack up the body to get it off.Other than that, the main negatives are waiting for it to cool before packing it up (I’m afraid pouring cold water on it would crack or warp it in some way) and cleaning the soot off! My hands were filthy after disassembling & packing it in the case.Overall, we love this little stove! Wished we’d had it when we used to camp a lot! Can’t wait to do some cooking on it with the grandkids!

Well running yet basic and simple design

It is very easy assemble and they made the pieces to fit inside each other for transport. While it is very sturdy and well built that comes with the cost of extra weight. So for long hikes maybe not the best. I on the other hand bought it for the purpose of use at a Basecamp so it will be excellent for that.

Gotta keep feeding the fire.

Twigs and such are easy to find around my place. Really fun and simple way to make a meal outdoors.

Built like a tank! It'll probably outlast us all.

It's hard to use the words "tiny" and "beefy" to describe the same item, but this little stove is just that. It's pretty dang small, but it's built out of nice thick box-iron and full seam welded for the all of the fixed connections. The fuel chute folds up and the upper pot-holder/grate also folds up so even though this is a bit too heavy for backpacking, it makes for a great stove when truck-camping or if you just wanted to heat something up in your back yard while getting rid of some small sticks. It gets a good draft going pretty quick and if you've ever used a normal rocket stove this will be exactly the same. (if you haven't, just look up the process on youtube as there are dozens of great examples of how to light it up and how to keep it fed).I literally can't think of a single thing I would change on this little stove. Well done StarBlue.Update: After using this stove many times over this summer I'd give it an extra star if I could. It's easy to set up, it's small, it's convenient, it takes very little to get it started, and it takes very little wood to actually get some real heat coming off it. On our latest adventure, we took it with us to the lake for a teenager birthday party and I grilled up a couple of dozen hotdogs in a matter of minutes and only used a couple of short sticks of wood to fuel it. The entire amount of wood I burned was less than what I would normally have used to build a simple campfire. It legitimately was up to temperature in under 2 minutes so it wasn't quite as quick as a propane grill, but so much faster than a charcoal grill.Once the hotdogs were cooked, I just dumped some lake water on it to cool it off and then packed it back up. No fuss and very little mess.

An incredible rocket stove that’s a one-time investment that will last a lifetime …

I had been thinking of building a rocket stove as I’d seen several decent tutorials. When I saw this stove, my question to myself was “why bother?” This stove isn’t a lightweight one as it weighs full 16.9 pounds (7.7kg). It does come with a nylon bag, but I’ll be scouting out something in the canvas line as it won’t hold up. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to assemble this stove (pun intended). Some assemblies can be daunting, but I had in up in just a few minutes. I was looking it over and puttering with it. Subsequent assemblies will be done in seconds as opposed to minutes. The stove is very sturdy and heavy enough to go on ‘most any kind of ground. I’ll probably dig a shallow pit around it when the weather is dry. It’s so sturdy I was able to put a heavy #7 cast iron pan on the top without toppling it. In fact, it didn’t even budge.I’m thrilled with this stove and will be using it a lot this summer. We had a dry spell and were warned not to start any fires, including those in fire pits and this type of stove. The stove is just under $100, but it’s made to last. Provided no pieces get lost (unlikely), this stove is a one-time investment that will last a lifetime.

Heavy duty rocket stove

This is made from heavy steel components. Assembly is easy and a bag is provided for parts. This is not a hiking camp stove, but something you could actually cook over with if you wanted. The design allows for continually feeding the fire as you cook as well. The steel cross-pieces that make up the stovetop can be mounted in two directions depending on whether you are using a deeper pot or a flat bottomed skillet. These features make it great for emergencies where you may not have power or ready access to other fuels for an extended period of time but still need to cook or boil water. If well cared for it seems like something that will last a long time as well. The relatively small fire size reduces fuel consumption and keeps the heat where you need it but also means it requires some tending. The angled fuel tray is semi-self-feeding.Due to the weight this would not be the best choice for hiking use.It looks to me like the design has changed over time. I think I like the square tubing of this current design better. When I first unpacked it the unit was covered with dirt but the stove appeared unused. I assume that wherever it was packed was not very clean.

Good price and heavy duty

People get rocket stoves for emergencies or to use while hiking or camping. This stove is heavy duty so I won't be hiking with it. However, with forest fires on the rise I am increasingly aware not to make a big fire at my campground. A rocket stove seemed like a nice alternative. It makes a contained fire, you can cook over it and I can place the stove in an existing fire ring. This stove doesn't disappoint on most points. Yes, it is heavy but then it is almost half the price of stoves like these you could backpack with. The instructions are clear and it was easy to put together. It also comes with a nice carry bag. Given its weight you need this. I am going camping in a couple days and I will try it out then. It has been raining the past few days. I will update the review after using it. At least for now I can say it is heavy duty, easy to carry and reasonably priced for a stove of this type.

Quality build with a glaring flaw

I'm no rocket scientist, but..... Neither is the guy who designed this stove. That's a pity, because it is sturdy, portable, and a perfect size. The problem lies in the back "air vent" near the ground. It shouldn't be there. Flame and heat ESCAPE thru the vents rather than going up the chimney to heat your pot. If you watch their video, the flames shoot out the vent and scorch the ground. When I COVER these vents (with foil) , I get a good fire, and water boils quickly with a handful of sticks. Uncover and I'm left with a pan of warm water. I wanted to love this. I've wanted a rocket stove for many years and I will use this but it will require modifications. Anyone adding this to their survival supplies needs to practice with it now before they need it.

Heavy duty but immobile

Great for camping and fishing catch & cooks. Not as light as a butane canister but it is a great heavy duty wood fired stove. The overall construction is solid, built with heavy gauge metal. There is a slight wobble from all the separate parts though, but not enough to affect the stability of the cooking top. The cook top is large and can fit most dutch ovens and cast iron pans. It does come covered in ash so it would be best to open this outdoors. The assembly and disassembly is easy, with good air flow leading to strong flames. The carry case is sturdy and rip resistant. I like how they sewed the straps all along the side of the case rather than just the top, so that it is stronger to carry this 18 lb heavy stove. There are some design issues that could be improved on. First, the rods that hold the legs in place could be flared on one end like a bolt, to prevent it from sliding out. These rods rather easily slide out, especially when moving the stove from place to place. The leg also easily falls off as a result and it can drop on your feet. I would have used locking pins or some threaded insert to keep them in place. Secondly, it is hard to move around once assembled and particularly when it is burning. There isn't really many spots to hold on and it would get hot as a result so don't expect to easily move this around. The stove would need to be fully cooled before you can touch it or change the side of the cook top. The cook top could be changed if you lift it by the holes and cool it down though. One way to cool it down quickly is to splash water on it but that may be detrimental to the metal in the long term.Overall, I give it 4 stars. I would buy this again and recommend it, but may use this less often than other lighter and more portable stoves.

Best grilling product for me and my family

Definitely was a good decision to buy this rocket stove. I recommend it! It's compact, easy to carry. It gives a strong heat with almost no smoke. I grilled beef and vegetalbes on it, and since the cooktop is interchangeable we could also boil water in a sauce pan. Good price/value.

Heavyweight Outdoor Cooking Stove – Nice Survival Tool

At 17 1/2-inches tall fully assembled, weighing around 14 pounds, this is not a backpacking stove. For survival-in-place or camp situations where transportation isn’t an issue and smaller bits of wood or other combustibles are available in an open-air environment, this non-insulated stove will cook.Theory of operation is that air is pulled into combustion chamber with heat rising and being directed up the single flue. Biggest issue with this general style is that you’ve got to constantly feed the device to keep the fire going as it will burn materials fairly rapidly. At current price point around 80 bucks at time of writing, I confirmed steel components have a very good fit, finish, and function. One small exception is the single flat piece insert that wood is supposed to lie on when inserted, so that a vent space is created at the bottom of the combustion chamber. It didn’t exactly fit into the machined notches protruding slightly from the face of the stove – not a deal-breaking issue in my opinion. Overall, I found the nested construction style with all pieces fitting in a convenient carry bag to be a good deal for me. I will primarily use this with a separately acquired device to boil and distill drinking water in emergency situations. Thanks for indicating if you’ve found my photos and comments helpful in your consideration of this item.

Very heavy, very solid

This stove is ideal for using very little wood and maximizing heat. There is very little smoke with these types of stoves, which is a plus if you are trying to be discreet. It would be great for camping but not for hikes, it's just too heavy. It has a very large cook top for the largest of pans, the metal is very, very thick and industrial. The carbon steel that they utilize is ideal for this application. I'm using this for camping, cookouts and emergencies. My only criticism is that my rocket stove came absolutely filthy dirty. It looked as if someone had used it and returned it; however, I don't know what happened, but there was mud/dirt all over the bag and unit. This is how I opened it up, so you could imagine how I felt! Yet, for the intended use of this item, it's going to get dirty and it's going to get muddy sometimes, and be filled with coals and ashes. This rocket stove is not going to win any beauty contests but it is very functional at cooking with very little fuel/wood.

Wonderful stove

Very sturdy stove, and so easy to use! Just start a tiny fire in the bottom, and then keep feeding small wood into port. Creates generous flame, with modest amount of smoke. Worked great for me with cast iron skillet.

I gifted the Cheese Board Set to my sister for her housewarming, and she hasn’t stopped using it. The oak wood feels premium, and the utensils cut cheese smoothly. Guests always compliment how elegant it looks.

The Roti Maker has cut my cooking time in half. Instead of rolling and cooking one by one, I can prepare multiple in minutes. It’s a real time-saver, especially for busy family dinners.

The Takoyaki Maker is amazing. I used to only enjoy takoyaki at restaurants, but now I can make 18 at a time at home. The included picks made flipping easy, and the flavor turned out authentic.
